CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 31st, 2023) – As George Phillips heads into Championship Night in the Cookout Summer Shootout with the U.S. Legend Car Series, a Touch of Gold has been added to the evening. Honoring WMM Special Olympics World Games Gold Medal Winner, Philip Blount. In a VIP Suite at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a hosted celebration in Philip’s honor will commence. What makes this all so special is, Philip and George have been friends for nearly a decade. The two met when George was 6 years old attending Kindergarten at Charlotte Country Day School. They became close and have a bond of friendship that is truly special. “My friendship with Philip means the world to me," George said, “He is kind and a great encourager.” They support each other's goals and ambitions through and through. Philip has been attending George’s races over the years and to have this event in his honor on Championship Night is simply a blessing.

 

When Philip was chosen to participate in the Special Olympics Games in Berlin, Germany, George and his entire family went into a full on Team Philip mode. With the games in another country the Phillips family like most had to follow along on social media and catch as much televised footage as possible. Philip has been actively involved with the Special Olympics for 15 years, training and competing. “This isn't local games, this isn't state games, but the World Games,” Philip said in a recent televised interview. Once Philip won his Gold in Shot-put, George and his family could not wait until the arrival home of Philip and his family to celebrate. “Philip is the best in the world,” commented George. “I always knew that, but now the world does too as he is a Gold medallist.” To have this honored upon Philip is truly amazing, making Championship night a little more special. George has won 4 out of 9 of the feature events in the 2023 Summer Shootout and is looking forward to round 10 of this amazing series.
